Fees
This year, license exams will be administered by volunteer examiner (VE) teams with Laurel VEC. Laurel VEC does not charge for license exams so there will be no fee for the exams at Hamvention®.  Admission to Hamvention® is not required to take an exam. If you want to take an exam but do not wish to attend Hamvention® let the security person at the gate know that you are there for an exam and someone will escort you to the exam site and back out after the exam. Parking is not provided for Hamvention® and you will be responsible for parking fees at the nearby lots.

What to bring / not bring
Pencils / Paper:  The VE team will supply pencils, scratch paper and answer sheets.
Calculator: You may use a calculator, however, the VE team must examine your calculator and determine that it is does not contain any equations, formulas or other data that would help you with the exam. Your best bet is to bring a simple, non-programmable, calculator.
Cell Phone / Two-way Radio: These must be turned off during the exam. You are not permitted to use them during the exam.
Tobacco: Smoking is not permitted in the exam rooms.

Paperwork
ID: The FCC will not allow you to take an exam for someone else. The VE team must determine that you are who you say you are. We must have a photo ID. We prefer a government issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport, but if you have a non-government issued photo ID (school, work), please bring a second form of ID.

Social Security Number: FCC regulations require that you submit your social security number or an FCC issued FRN number with your paperwork. If you already have an FRN (for example from a personal Marine Radio or GMRS license), you should use the FRN to avoid confusion at the FCC).  Foreign citizens who are not required to have a Social Security number may obtain an FRN by visiting the FCC's ULS website at:
http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls

Credits for current and previous licenses
Current Novice License: Since there is no longer a Morse Code requirement, this license confers no credit. You will need to pass element 2 to earn a Technician license.

Current Technician license issued prior to March 21, 1987: This gives you credit for elements 2 and 3 and qualifies you for upgrade to General after completing only paperwork (i.e. no exam).

Expired Technician license issued prior to March 21, 1987: This gives you credit for element 3 only. You will need to pass element 2 to obtain a license and then you will earn a General license.

Current Technician license issued on or after March 21, 1987: This gives you credit for element 2 only. You need to pass element 3 to earn a General class license.

Current General Class or Advanced license: These give you credit for elements 2 and 3. You need to pass element 4 to earn an Amateur Extra license.

Expired Licenses: With the exception of the expired Technician license issued prior to March 21, 1987, an expired license confers no credit.

* Note: if a license has expired but is still within the two year grace period for renewal, it can be applied for the same credit as a current license. However, an expired license confers no operating privileges.

If you are using a license for credit, we must see the original of the license and must file a photocopy of it with your paperwork. If you don't have the original, contact the FCC (1270 Fairfield Rd; Gettysburg, PA 17325-7245). Provide them with as much information about your license: call, approximate date issued, name issued to and address issued to. They may be able to provide you with a letter that can serve as proof. If you use a FCC letter as proof, we must see the original and file a photocopy with your paperwork.

Credit for an unexpired CSCE
A CSCE is a Certificate of successful Completion of an Element and is issued at an exam session when you pass an exam element, but did not earn a new license.  All CSCE's expire 365 days after issue. An expired CSCE confers no credit. If you plan on waiting until Hamvention® to submit a CSCE for credit, make sure it will not expire before then.

An unexpired CSCE for element 3 and a current Technician Class license will earn you a General Class license.

Unexpired CSCE's for elements 3 and 4 and a current Technician Class license will earn you an Amateur Extra Class license.

With the elimination of the Morse Code requirement, there is no longer any credit for an element 1 (Morse Code) CSCE.

If you are using an unexpired CSCE for credit, we need to see the original and must file a photocopy with your paperwork. If you have lost your CSCE, do not contact the FCC as they have no record of CSCE's, Instead, contact the local VE team or the VEC that issued the CSCE.

Advanced Registration / Walk-ins
With the elimination of the Morse Code requirement, we anticipate a high demand for license exams at Hamvention®. Our testing space is limited.  If you plan on taking exams at Hamvention®, we urge you to email (exams@hamvention.org) to register for your exam. Indicate which session you prefer (Friday PM, Saturday AM or Saturday PM).  You will receive a confirmation email.

Walk-ins will be welcome provided we have resources to accommodate them. However, those with advanced registration and confirmation emails will be given first priority.

Help Out
If you would like to help out with license exams, please drop us an email. We need volunteer examiners as well as non-VEs who would like to help out with administration outside of the exam room.
