HAM RADIO TOWN MEETING
Don't Throw The Past Away,
or Grandpa's Ham Radio - The Magic Of Yesteryear
Saturday, May 17,
2008 11:30 AM - 1:45 PM - Forum Room 3
Moderator
Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF
President, The Amateur Radio Newsline, Inc.
As ham radio flings itself
headlong into the so-called "digital revolution of the 21st century"
the 2008 "Ham Radio
Town Meeting" will pause for a moment to take a look back at the hobby
over the past half-century to see where
it was in the latter 1950's through the mid 1990's.
Most of the change that lead ham radio to the
hobby/service we know today began in the 1960's and continued
through to the end of the 20th century. The speakers you will hear all
were "kid hams" or "teen hams" in the 1950's.
Most got licensed in that era and lived though tubes giving way to
solid state; SSB coming into its own HF; FM and
repeaters on 2 meters replacing point to point AM on 6 meters; early
home-built computers replacing mechanical
RTTY systems while long traditional equipment names like Hallicrafters,
Hammerlund, Heathkit, and even Collins
Radio peaked and then gave ground to newcomers from across the Pacific
bearing the company names Inoue
Communications, Trio and Yaesu. There were many other changes over the
five decades we will cover and we
sincerely hope that you will enjoy this trip back through time brought
to you by the 2008 Dayton Hamvention and
the Amateur Radio Newsline, Inc.
Speaker
Dave Bell, W6AQ
"The Tradition of Ham Radio and How to Hand it Down, Generation to
Generation"
Dave
will discuss what we call the "tradition" of ham radio, how it
continued when handed down generation to generation and how this lead
us to where we are today. As part of his presentation you will be
treated to a trip back in time to 1969 through a screening of his
award-winning 28 minute film "The Hams Wide World"
Speaker
Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF
"Getting Your License in the Old Days"
Back in the 1950's there were no
weekend cram classes. No Internet based training and usually no
assistance from non-ham family members and friends. A young want-to-be
ham was really on his or her own. In his talk, Bill will remind you of
how it was to study for your Novice and Technician class licenses and
then find a local ham who could administer one or both exams.
Speaker
Vern Jackson, WA0RCR
"The Gear of Yesteryear"
David will show and discuss some of the gear
that hams bought and assembled into an operating station in “the good
old days”.
Speaker
Henry Feinberg, K2SSQ
Associate Producer, The Amateur Radio Newsline, Inc.
"The Homebrew Station"
Henry
will discuss the days when most kids and some adults could either not
afford off the shelf gear or just wanted the challenge of building most
or all of their ham station. Henry says his interest in electronics as
a teen lead him to ham radio and then onto a career as a film maker and
exhibit designer. Perhaps his best known work was the design and
construction of the "umbrella space communicator" seen in the Steven
Spielberg film "ET-The Extraterrestrial.
Speaker
Joe Eisenberg, K0NEB
"Building Early Kit Stations"
Joe is known these days as "Mr.
Kit Builder." He has been building kits since he was a kid. At this
years Ham Radio Town Meeting he takes us back to when companies like
Eico, PACO, Knight Kit and of coarse Heathkit ruled the low cost ham
radio airwaves with kit gear almost anyone could successfully build.
Speaker
Dan Ringer, K8WV
"The Thrill of that First Contact"
Dan has been a radio amateur since 1963 when he
took to the air using a Heathkit GR-91 receiver and an Eico 720
transmitter (with a knife-switch to go between receive and transmit).
Dan also remembers the thrill of his first contact as a newly licensed
ham and will share the moment with all of us.
Speaker
Steve Mendelsohn, W2ML
"Early Ham Radio Emergency Communications"
Steve
will take us from the early 1960's when most emergency communications
preparedness took place on 10 and 6 meter AM into the world of FM, 2
meters and repeaters. A world of emergency communications and public
service communications that he helped to establish.
Speaker
Carole Perry, WB2MGP
"Being a Girl Ham in a Guys World of the '60's"
Everyone knows Carole, as the
person who brought ham radio training into the NYC school system. Far
fewer
know that she has also spent a good part of her ham radio career doing
public service communications. In her
presentation, Carole will relate what it was like for her and other
female hams in an era when it was the guys
who ruled supreme.
Speaker
Bob Heil, K9EID
"A Ham Radio Education and Career"
Bob will explain how ham radio can lead to
success in later life. In his talk, Bob will relate the way ham radio
was
his "college," his station, a widow to the world, and his networking
with other radio amateurs that in-turn lead him
to a career and the establishment of his company, Heil Sound Limited,
to the position of success
and respect that it enjoys today.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Again
in 2008 the Town Meeting Door Prizes will be presented by ham radio's
favorite fur-suited creature: "Jixser",
the worlds only Hyena with a ham license. Well, her alter ego Julie
Fraedrich, KD8AYJ, holds the ham ticket,
but both enjoy the hobby. Meet them "both" at the 2008 Hamvention Ham
Radio Town Meeting."
Door prizes will be awarded between speakers and
at the end of the session.
"Don't
throw the past away. You might need it some rainy day. Dreams
can come true again, when everything old is new again" -- Peter Allen

9:15 AM - 10:15 AM - Forum Room 1
Speaker
Andrea Hartlage, KG4IUM
Assistant Section Manager Georgia
2007 Goldfarb Scholarship Winner
MDRS Crew 69 Communications Specialist
Georgia Tech is the only crew to use Amateur Radio for communications.
Not surprisingly, they are much more
successful in communicating than other crews who use FRS radios.
Sponsored by the Mars Society, each MDRS
team embarks on a two-week mission where crew members simulate life on
Mars, and practices conducting
science experiments and engineering tasks "in sim." This means that no
one is allowed to leave the Hab without a
spacesuit unless they are in one of the simulated pressurized tunnels.
As the youngest communications specialist
to participate in MDARS, Andrea established and maintained all
communications for Crew 69 of the Mars Society’s
Desert Research Station in Utah. Hear of this unique experience.

DON’T
TELL ME IT CAN’T BE DONE!
Saturday, May 17,
2008 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM - Forum Room 2
Moderator and Speaker
Dr. Tom Behler, KB8TYJ
Dr. Thomas Behler, a visually-impaired ham, and
Professor of Sociology at Ferris State University in Michigan, will
present his thoughts on the breadth of our hobby and its applications
for many different people.
The
presentation will begin with an overview of the adaptive aids that Tom
uses to conduct his activities as a blind ham
and County EC/RO. These aids range from a talking computer to an
audible beam location indicator. In addition to
demonstrating these aids, Tom will show that such adaptive technology,
coupled with some outside help and creativity,
can allow a blind ham to do what a sighted individual can.
The presentation will then turn
to how people with disabilities can help with amateur radio public
service and emergency
communications. Many of these service functions can be done from one’s
home station, or from a fixed location.
The formal presentation will conclude with an
overview of a course by Dr. Behler at Ferris State University entitled
"The
Sociology Of Disasters And Emergency Preparedness". Aside from the
highly relevant topics the course covers, the
course is an excellent example of how amateur radio can be combined
with a person’s profession.

SOFTWARE
DEFINED RADIO

"Hands-on SDR Projects"
The
phenomenal Software Defined Radio paradigm shift continues with a
significant number of “off the shelf’ as
well as amateur hardware offerings. Many programmers are fueling the
fire! Come hear the leaders in this movement
describe the vast potential of this rapidly advancing technology.
This forum will give an overview
of some SDR projects and show you how to get started. Are you are an
experimenter
or a designer, how can you contribute? Even if you only want to find
out what SDR is all about, this forum is for you.
Topics will include: Basic SDR architecture, HPSDR project status,
useful test equipment, SDR computer hardware
requirements, and SDR software.
Speaker
Phil Harman, G3WXO, VK6APH
"Fully Digital HF Radios"
This
forum will explain the techniques that are used in a new generation of
fully digital HF radios and discuss their
advantages, disadvantages and performance in comparison to conventional
analogue radios. These new radios digitize
the received signal directly at the antenna socket and generate the
transmit signal directly in the Power Amplifier.
Speaker
Frank Brickle, AB2KT
"SDR in the Clouds"
This forum will discuss the art and science of
designing and implementing a remotable station in the new world of
Software Designed Radio.
For
a variety of reasons, hams are becoming very interested in using their
radios remotely. Typically this means
locating the control devices in one place, the radios somewhere else,
and possibly the antenna system at some
distance from the RF hardware as well. And what a given piece of the
system does, corresponds pretty much
exactly to where it's located physically.
With Software Defined Radio, the
physical locations are suddenly a lot less important. The functional
distribution
of system components can be much more flexible. Some of the “radio”
parts can be on one place, other parts
elsewhere, or some functions can be completely transposed to a
different chunk of the system.
We will cover both theoretical and practical
issues involved in building a system that's tailored to different
kinds of high-performance requirements, such as multi-multi contesting
or weak-signal VHF.
An
Atlas Motherboard, and Ozymandias USB computer interface, the basic
building blocks of a High Performance
Software Defined Radio will be given away as a door prize, at the end
of the session.
You must be present to win.

TECHNIQUES
OF BEST OPERATORS
Sunday, May 18, 2008

Anthony Pazzola W2BEJ
Do you frequently find that your contacts end up
broken up due to poor copy or interference? Do you have
trouble passing information? Do you want to be a crack public service
operator and don't know where to begin?
Learn the Techniques of the Best Operators! The Best Operators KNOW
what to do to complete that QSO, no
matter what.
This
Forum will start off by looking at the basics of good FM repeater
operation and move right into what you
need to know to be a crack public service operator. Then, we get real
serious as we discuss how to interface
with disaster agencies in times of emergency.
Next we will look at contest
operating, an activity done both for fun and for emergency training.
Finally, we
look at some of the minute details of operation, including things like
equipment purchase, shack layout and
even how to ask for and collect QSL cards.
With propagation at dead-low sunspot conditions,
making contacts are a tough proposition. Make sure your
equipment and skills are up to it!

TEST
EQUIPMENT FOR HAMS
Friday, May 16, 2008
3:30 PM - 5:00 PM - Forum Room 5
Moderator
and Speaker
Dino Papas, KL0S
Most hams are familiar with
basic test equipment such as volt, ohm and ammeters, oscilloscopes, and
signal
generators. Many have heard about other test equipment, but may not be
as familiar with their purpose and
use. This forum examines the wide range of test equipment beyond the
basics, hopefully stimulating enough
interest in the technical side of ham radio to better maintain their
stations, antennas and the confidence to
homebrew their own gear.
