Hamvention 2026
Special Event Station, W8BI

The focus of the Special Event Station (SES) at Hamvention is not so much logging contacts – although we do that, we also provide unique and positive experiences for the attendees. We generally have some of the latest radios and various types of antennas that vendors may wish to showcase during the show. For example, during last year’s show we were able to provide the Icom 7760 for attendees to experience remote operation with a remote-control head and a separate RF Deck that was located at a separate sight. We were also able to demonstrate remote operations using laptops and computer software.

Our favorite aspects of operations are attracting non-hams to the booth and have them operate while under the tutelage of experienced Elmers (mentors). We take particular delight in getting young people excited about the field of amateur radio and its possibilities.

While attending Hamvention 2026, make it a point to stop by the Special Event Station. Take some time to visit and “ragchew” with the volunteers, inspect the equipment, have a bottled water, try out some new equipment, and maybe make a few contacts. We offer a relaxed atmosphere of discovery and collegiality with an attitude of service.

If you can’t make it to Hamvention this year, you can still be a part of the Special Event station experience. Just answer one of our calls and help bring a smile and a bit of excitement to our operators. You can’t imagine the look on a young person’s face when they are actually speaking with someone “over the air” for the first time. “It takes two to make a contact” and you can be a part of that. We
can’t promise to use a certain band or frequency, but in the past, we have had the best luck with 20 and 40 meters.

We are really looking forward to meeting you either in person at the Special Event Station Booth, or in an over the air QSO.
